Strange Lights and Explosions Reported Near Blackrain Estate

Several residents report loud booms and unusual lights coming from the property. No official statement has been issued by the Blackrain family.

CHAPEL HILL — A series of loud noises and unusual flashes of light coming from the area surrounding Blackrain Estate drew the attention of numerous residents west of Chapel Hill this evening.

The first reports came in shortly after 8 p.m., when several residents said they heard at least two powerful explosions from the direction of the property, followed several minutes later by other noises that were difficult to identify.

“At first I thought it was a thunderstorm,” said one resident who lives about three miles from the estate. “Then I stepped out onto the porch and the sky was almost completely clear. I saw a very bright light above the trees. Blue, I think. It only lasted a few seconds.”

A second witness reported seeing what she described as “a very low orange flash on the horizon,” followed by a noise strong enough to rattle the windows of her home.

None of the accounts could be independently verified.

Blackrain Estate is one of the largest privately owned properties in the Chapel Hill area and has remained largely closed to the public for decades. The residence belongs to Alfred Johnas Blackrain, the last surviving member of one of the county’s wealthiest and most private families.

Blackrain has lived an extremely reclusive life for years and is rarely seen outside the property.

In addition to the main residence, the estate includes extensive grounds, service buildings, greenhouses, stables, athletic facilities, and a small private airfield. The presence of the airfield has led some residents to speculate that the noises may have been connected to an aircraft accident.

At this time, however, no aviation incidents have been officially reported in the area.

Another possibility raised by residents is an electrical malfunction or an accident involving one of the many technical facilities located on the property.

A county fire department spokesperson contacted by phone late this evening said he could not confirm whether emergency crews had entered the estate.

“We have received several calls concerning loud noises in that area,” he said. “At this time, we do not have enough information to determine the cause.”

The private road leading to the estate’s main entrance was still closed when a Chapel Informer contributor reached the area shortly before 10 p.m.

The residence itself could not be seen from the gate. It stands a considerable distance inside the property and is partly concealed by dense vegetation.

A faint, intermittent glow was visible above the tree line.

Several minutes later, another explosion was heard.

Louder than the previous ones.

A motorist who had stopped along the road claimed to have seen “something very large moving behind the trees” shortly before the blast.

Asked to describe what he had seen more precisely, the man replied only:

“I really couldn’t say. It was too far away.”

No other witnesses have confirmed his account.

There has been no statement from Johnas Blackrain or members of the estate staff.

Attempts to reach the residence by telephone went unanswered.

It is therefore impossible at this time to determine whether a fire, technical accident, or some other kind of emergency has occurred inside the property.

Several residents also reported a brief power outage and radio interference in the area, although it could not be established whether either phenomenon was connected to the events at Blackrain Estate.

Shortly before this edition went to press, another glow was observed above the hill.

This time, it was red.

It remained visible for several seconds.

Then it disappeared.
